North African French youths fought with English fans at an outdoor screen showing a World Cup match on the eve of an England-Argentina game at St.-Etienne, France.
Authorities stopped the screening of the Netherlands-Yugoslavia contest around 11 p.m., while violence spread to the area around the stadium, where the local youths burned several cars.
At least 10 people were arrested, including nine French and one Englishman. Police have a reinforced 1,600-member force for Tuesday’s match, where more trouble is feared.
There was no immediate word on injuries.
Police said the incident began when the local youths from poor neighborhoods, seeking to avenge English-Tunisian clashes after a match in Marseille two weeks earlier, insulted, then struck English fans.
The English fought back and riot police intervened, arresting the 10 people. Police dogs were also deployed.
– Twenty-five people were arrested in a rock-and-bottle throwing incident in Huntington Park, Calif., where many residents have close ties to Mexico, but Mexico’s World Cup loss and hundreds of officers in riot gear blockading downtown deterred a repeat of last week’s widespread rowdiness.
