The Lake County Forest Preserve District Commission plans to file for $500,000 in conservation grants.
The commission will file an application for a $400,000 state grant with the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the Grand Illinois/West Loop Trail connection project.
The grant would help buy a 137-acre parcel that will serve to connect a one-mile section of the Grand Illinois/West Loop Trail project.
The parcel, located near Wauconda and Volo, is part of the Forest Preserve District’s new Singing Hills Forest Preserve. It has oak woodlands, wetlands and farmland.
In addition, the commission will file for a $100,000 Northeastern Illinois Wetlands Conservation Account grant for the wetlands and prairies at Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve, near Lake Forest.
This grant would be used for a water control structure and for wetland restoration efforts on 60 acres of former wetland and prairie communities in Middlefork Savanna.
