A Wilderness of Mirrors (Alias)

You want ambition? How about a 17-track soundtrack to a fictional movie based on–of all things–the Book of Job? “A Wilderness of Mirrors” plays like a Badlands version of Lou Reed’s “Berlin,” in which fate turns a marriage into a punching bag. The music is an evocative guitar-bass-drums swirl, short on rock (“The Bottle and the Cork” a notable, howling exception) but long on edge-of-dawn reveries from a “7 Room Motel,” spiked by chilling moments of clarity in “Aftermath” and “The Quality of Mercy.” Now’s the time to catch up with one of the few songwriters expanding the tradition of Reed, Bob Dylan and Pete Townshend for the ’90s.
