Expecting 2,000 at its first-ever village-sponsored Taste of Wheeling, officials saw a walloping crowd of more than 8,000, a surprise that was easy to digest.

“It was wonderful, fantastic and very heartwarming to see the residents of Wheeling come out to support the village,” said Judy Abruscato, chairwoman of the event.

Ten restaurants and bakeries were on hand to serve up their specialties to lines that never dwindled.

Bob Chinn’s Crabhouse featured fried shrimp and garlic shrimp, good finger food and easy to eat, said Chinn’s General Manager Frank D’Angelo, who returned to the restaurant three times to replenish his supply of shrimp.

“The crowd is much more than we ever imagined,” D’Angelo said. “It’s unbelievable.”

With garlic shrimp in one hand and an egg roll in the other, Wheeling resident Ken Warren was having a great time sampling. “I think this is a good idea.” he said. “It’s an opportunity to try several restaurants at one time.”

LaBaguette Bakery featured Dippin’ Dots, the ice cream of the future; churros (Mexican donut); and hot dogs and chips for the kids. Lupita’s Bakery offered cinnamon bread and turnovers.

El Famous Burrito featured two types of corn on the cob, buttered and Mexican style (covered with a mixture of lime, mayonnaise, parmesan cheese and cayenne pepper). “Ooh,” said Sue Wade of Des Plaines, who tried the Mexican style. “It’s actually very good.”

Shirley and Corky Iverson of Des Plaines opted for the buttered corn. “It’s nice and fresh and sweet,” Shirley said, as they headed back to the food tents for an eggroll.

A newcomer to Wheeling, Crawdaddy Bayou featured red beans and rice, jambalaya and bayou dog with Zapps potato chips from Louisiana. “We have the only imported potato chips at the fest,” said head chef David Teichman.

Settled on a blanket with family and friends, Julie Muszynski of Wheeling said they came for the wide variety of food. “So far we’ve had cheese pizza, corn, shrimp and ribs.”

The event also featured an afternoon parade, free games and face painting for the kids, musical entertainment and a fireworks display.
