Your June 10 editorial “Lock away `family’ guns–or else” pointed out that 15 states require gun-owning parents to keep their weapons under lock and key. I say Illinois should jump out ahead of the pack.

Let me first digress by saying that I have always, since the age of 12 or so, owned guns. I just purchased a new gun this month. My hobbies are skeet (for sport) and birds (for consumption).

Why not require that gun owners check and store their guns at the local police station? This was required in the Old West when things got out of hand.

When one wants to go to target practice or hunting, one simply trots down to the local lockup and checks his weapon out for a prescribed period and location. This extra service could be funded either through local taxes or user fees.

The National Rifle Association may not like this, and the gun manufacturers may not like this, but my wife would be happier and certain city streets would be safer.
