Indonesia has agreed with some of its lenders to reschedule principal payments on some of its $54.4 billion in foreign debt, said top economic official Ginandjar Kartasasmita.

After meeting with President B.J. Habibie, Ginandjar said he’ll announce later in the week the total amount of rescheduled debt and the lenders that have agreed to the revised terms.

A new $6 billion in loan commitments from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and others announced Thursday includes the rollover of outstanding loans owed by the Indonesian

government to its international creditors, Ginandjar said.

He wouldn’t say how much of the $6 billion includes the extended credits.
