In response to “Old Glory needs no protection” (Editorial, July 7): In the ideal world nobody would need a law to protect themselves from assault, battery, slander, libel or perjury. But in a world where everybody believes they can do anything they please, we need laws. Without laws, there would be chaos!

These are your words: “But there is a big difference between loving Old Glory and idolizing her. Those who would amend the Constitution to combat flag desecration are guilty of the latter.” The vast majority of us worship one God. The vast majority of us love our flag. And the vast majority of us believe that our flag deserves protection.

The amendment to protect the flag would in no way diminish freedom of speech for anyone. The amendment does not mandate a law to protect the flag. The amendment is an enabling amendment that is very short and says Congress has the power to pass laws and protect the flag.
