Joan Beck’s column concerning mental illness (“A society in denial over mental illness pays a steep price,” Commentary, July 30) was very thoughtful, but she failed to mention one other area that needs drastic improvement in order to properly treat people with mental illness. That is in the area of equitable insurance coverage.
If your brain disorder is Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or seizure disorder, you get much higher benefits from your insurance than if it is depression, schizophrenia or manic depressive illness.
An end to this discrimination would help do away with the stigma associated with seeking help for a mental illness.
