I am a member of the National Honor Society from the year 1928.
In Clarence Page’s excellent column “Premarital sex and the National Honor Society” (Commentary, Aug. 9), he didn’t follow through. What about the “fast-zippered studs” who were responsible for these pregnancies?
It still takes a male and female to make a baby, and the male is getting off scot-free. It is also quite possible that this same male could be inducted into the society because there is no way to identify him, but we can sure identify her because she is left “holding the baby.”
And so it goes–the female of the species is still a “secnd class citizen.” They are equally responsible, but she is the one who still is pilloried.
I guess I’m just a crotchety senior citizen, but sexual intercourse (with teens as well as all age groups) has become as casual as a handshake. If a female doesn’t get propositioned on her first date she feels she has failed. What has happened to the moral structure of our country?
So let these girls have this honor. They are paying (and will continue to pay) for their “easy virtue”–and it is unfair to withhold the membership unless you also can ostracize the studs who were responsible.
