Somebody asked the other day whether there’s ever been two parties in a public dispute less deserving of sympathy than the NBA owners and NBA players. Well, sure. Here’s my short list: Iraq vs. Iran–Countries that have established why the rest of the world moved out of the 17th Century. Linda Tripp vs. Monica Lewinsky–A real-life version of Mad Magazine’s old “Spy vs. Spy,” only without the wit, originality or cleverness. Just as tasteless, however. Don King vs. Mike Tyson–One has electric hair, one has an electric stare, both deserve the electric chair. But as far as two parties in a sports-labor dispute completely devoid of sympathy as well as empathy. . . . No. Never has been one like this one. To put it another way: Which one is Beavis?
