In a Nov. 5 letter, Bruce Berntzen writes, “Make it mandatory to vote.” That’s a terrible idea. People who don’t bother either don’t care and would therefore make an uneducated choice, or they intend to abstain.
Mandatory voting would require people to watch a person vote or examine a person’s ballot to see that he or she did indeed punch some choices. This is impractical, and examining the ballot would be illegal.
