The Joliet City Council’s proposed ordinance to allow officers to ticket motorists solely for failing to wear seat belts is another government intrusion under the guise of public safety. The police efforts should be on enforcing existing traffic laws that reduce accidents. While they are issuing tickets for not wearing seat belts, the speeders are whizzing by, creating the next accident that make seat belts necessary.
