Congratulations to the Tribune’s editorial board for evaluating Minnesota vs. Carter, the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision about search-and-seizure law, from the viewpoint of each citizen’s right to liberty and privacy (Editorial, Dec. 7).
The “war on drugs” has been elevated in the minds of many into a cause that justifies unprecedented curtailment of citizens’ constitutional rights. Cases are rated by some as “victories” or “defeats” for law enforcement agencies, not by whether they further or undermine the cause of liberty.
I’m glad the Tribune used as its touchstone on this issue the ideal of individual liberty in a free society, not whether the court made the police’s job easier. Human liberty is hard won and easily lost.
