Parents of some pupils at Coultrap Elementary School in Geneva are concerned that plans for remodeling Geneva High School may place their children’s safety in jeopardy.

Peggy Condon, whose daughters attend Coultrap, told board members Monday she is worried the relocation of the high school’s loading dock to Logan Avenue would place truck traffic directly in the path of children walking to Coultrap, which is near the high school.

“My concern is for the safety of kids walking to school,” Condon said. “There are trucks making deliveries during that time. It just seems like an accident waiting to happen.”

The loading dock is on the north side of the high school building and faces Center Street.

Supt. John Murphy told Condon school officials are willing to consider suggestions for an alternative location for the loading dock.

“We certainly don’t want to overlook this very legitimate and important issue,” he said.

Board members are going to vote on the final plans Feb. 8, but Steve Lillie, board president, said plans can be altered later, noting that 104 changes were made to the middle school plans before that project was completed.

The 100,000-square-foot high school addition and renovation project will get under way in May and is expected to be completed by the 2000-01 school year.

Residents interested in offering input on the renovation plans can meet with design architect Ken Grabow from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in Room 102 at the high school, 415 Logan Ave.
