For the first time, astronomers have recorded visible light from the source of a gamma ray burst, a mysterious deep-space eruption more powerful than the energy of 10 million billion stars, researchers said Wednesday.
The gamma ray burst was detected at 4:47 a.m. Saturday by two orbiting observatories. Ground-based telescopes were able to capture optical light from the fading afterglow that followed the burst.
Never before have astronomers linked optical observations to gamma ray detection.
