Radio announcer Paul Harvey issued an on-air apology Wednesday for suggesting earlier this month that Islam was a “fraudulent religion.” Harvey said he had gotten many letters protesting his words, which were sandwiched between Jan. 4 reports about Osama bin Laden and gunfire in a mosque in Pakistan.
Harvey told listeners Wednesday that the target of the remark was “terrorists” and not Islam itself. “Followers of Islam, please excuse this imprecise wordsmith for his unintentional slur,” he said.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations, an advocacy group that said it had informed Muslims about Harvey’s original remarks, thanked him for the apology.
