The Mt. Prospect Village Board this week approved a resolution asking the Wisconsin Central Railroad to order its engineers to stop sounding their train whistles when traveling through town between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

According to village officials, Illinois Commerce Commission rules allow the trains to sound their horns at all grade-level highway crossings, and it takes a written request from a municipality to get them to stop.

The ban on whistle-blowing would not apply if the train engineer determines there is a risk of injury or property damage at a crossing, village officials said.
