Shirley Alexander, 70, most recently of Dunnigan, Calif. and formerly of St. Charles, died Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. Born in Wheaton, Mrs. Alexander was a graduate of St. Charles High School. She was employed by Smurfit Company (Diamond International) and DuKane Corp. for many years. Upon retiring, she enjoyed commercial nut farming with her family on their almond orchard in California. Survivors include her husband, Harry “Gene”; three sons, Steven Hughes, Jon Meredith and David Meredith; three stepdaughters, Roxanne Burrs, Cynthia Aguilina and Christine Viesca; a stepson, Bradley; and a grandson. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Union Cemetery on Illinois Highway 25, St. Charles.
