Quite a few readers ask for lists of seniors-only residences. So in the spirit of giving people what they want, here are some senior housing projects.
The emphasis is on “some.” This list does not include every senior housing development–new, planned, established or otherwise in the Chicago area. It’s only a start and the list mostly includes recent developments.
For more information about other projects in your area, contact a local social service agency, or your town hall. These organizations know what’s going on and can be immensely helpful.
Also, remember to check out the places yourself, in person. This list is only a resource of some available options.
Assisted living
– Kingsley Place at Lincoln Square in Chicago is under construction. The building, at 5527 N. Maplewood Ave., will have 81 assisted-living units. Meals and housekeeping are included. Some special care suites for the memory-impaired are available.

– Gidwitz Place is operated by the Council for Jewish Elderly and is located at 1551 Lake Cook Rd., Deerfield. The facility has 125 apartments. Rent includes some services, such as meals. For information, call 847-374-0500.
– Covenant Home of Chicago, 2720 Foster Ave., has 56 units. Entrance fee of $20,000 to $50,000 is required. Residents also pay monthly fees. Each of the five floors has its own kitchen and dining area, though main meals are served in common dining area. Call 773-506-6900.
– Asbury Towers, 311 S. Lincolnway in North Aurora, has 244 units. Apartments are for rent. No entry fee required. Meals are available, plus activities, housekeeping services and transportation. Call 630-264-6800.
Long-term care
– An Alzheimer’s facility is being built in north suburban Lincolnshire. The two-story building is the second phase of the Wealshire development, which currently provides long-term care for 144 Alzheimer patients. Phase two will accommodate 142 residents and should be complete in the early part of 2000. For information, call 847-883-9000.
– Churchill Estate of Clarendon Hills is a three-story building with 82 apartments. There are 28 special units for residents with dementia. On-site health care is available 24 hours a day. No entry fee required. For information, call 630-789-1135.
Continuing care
– The Garlands of Barrington has opened an information center at 202 South Cook St., Barrington. The community will have 282 independent-living residences, some assisted-living apartments and skilled nursing suites. No entry fee. Construction should be complete in 2001. – Lake Forest Place is located on 49 acres adjacent to Lake Forest Hospital. Entry fee is required, plus monthly rent. Project includes cottages, apartments, assisted-living and skilled nursing care facilities. For information, call 847-604-8800.
– Classic Residence by Hyatt will build a community on 26 acres at the former Glenview Naval Air Station. The project will include 252 independent-living units. A health center will have 25 assisted-living apartments, 13 Alzheimer support suites and 38 skilled nursing suites. There will be an entry fee, plus monthly fees. – Victory Health Services of Waukegan is developing the Village at Victory Lakes in Lindenhurst. It includes a nursing home, 100 apartments, 60 assisted-living suites and 40 cottages. Entrance fee, plus monthly fee. For information, call 847-356-4666.
Independent/assisted living
– The Seasons at Glenview Place in Northbrook will have 168 independent- and 54 assisted-living units. The rental community expects to open this fall. For information, call 847-729-5159.
– Carriage Oaks in St. Charles has 65 independent-living apartments. Some general services, such as housekeeping are available. Monthly fees. Entry fees are refundable. Call 630-584-2112.
– Marian Village in Homer Township, just west of Orland Park, is a new 80-acre community, sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago. It has apartments, duplex homes and an assisted-living facility. An entry fee is required for independent spots. No entry fee for assisted living. For more information call 708-301-4583.
– Maravilla at Vernon Hills is under construction on Milwaukee Avenue. It will have 287 rental apartments. Meals are included. For information, call 877-929-1000.
– Park Place on the Green, just west of Joliet, has 76 town homes for seniors. Units are for sale and priced from $89,900 to $116,900. One-, two- and three-bedroom units are available. Call 815-725-7400.
Affordable apartments
– Mayfair Senior Commons at Lawrence and Elston Avenues in Chicago has 97 units. The building is designed for independent seniors. Call 312-726-5600
– St. Edmund’s Tower has 59 apartments. The property is located at 6141 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago. Call 773-643-0374.
– Approval has been granted for a 60-unit seniors building at 8901 S. Loomis Ave., in Chicago. It will be part of a mixed-use project called Brainerd Town Center. Call 312-424-4250.
