Botanical-related wallpapers have long been a tradition in the interior design vernacular, but, as with many other motifs, their popularity has waxed and waned. Several influences have converged to send their stock once again soaring: a widespread interest in home gardening, a desire to bring the outdoors inside, the appeal of natural colors and fashion’s fascination with using natural materials.
Yet, like revival fashions, the new bucolic-inspired wallpapers are hardly clones of long-ago favorites. The current crop reflects two prime approaches.
Miniature trees and topiaries are isolated against white or cream backgrounds, and multiples of small or oversized leaves and branches are crowded together to suggest exotic or densely planted locales. One caveat: The natural theme is best used sparingly.
