The next Olympic Summer Games, to be held in Sydney, are a little less than 18 months away, but it’s not too early to order hotel accommodations and tickets. Cartan Tours, the company chosen by the organizers of the Sydney games as the official United States sales agent for Olympics tickets and tours, began taking orders last week for the Games, scheduled for Sept. 15 to Oct. 1, 2000.

Don Williams, Cartan’s vice president, said that Olympics tickets will range from $8 for early round soccer games to $1,054 for top seats at opening and closing ceremonies.

Basketball preliminaries are $42, the finals $248 to $347; gymnastics starts at $65 for opening rounds and goes up to $217 to $271 for finals. Customers will know by Sept. 30 if their orders can be filled for the events they requested.

Cartan has a choice of hotels in Sydney or in the Blue Mountains, a region of spectacular natural beauty about 90 minutes from the city, or the Central Coast, an area just north of the city that is famous for its beaches and headlands.

Train service — free to Olympics ticket holders on the day of the event they attend — is available to the Blue Mountains and Central Coast.

Six-night accommodations packages — including round-trip air fare from Los Angeles, airport transfers and full breakfast daily — start at $4,990 a person, double occupancy, for rooms with private homeowners. For rooms in pubs (the equivalent of a small hotel in the United States), rates start at $5,190; the hotel packages start at $5,490. Olympics tickets are extra.
