It seems like a long way to travel to play your neighbors. But that’s exactly what Boston College, New Hampshire and Maine will do this week to compete in the Frozen Four of the NCAA hockey championships.

It’s the first time Hockey East has sent three teams to the final four. The last time one conference sent three schools was in 1992 when the CCHA’s Lake Superior State, Michigan State, and Michigan went.

The New England coaches said they are not surprised three teams are making the cross-country trip to Anaheim.

“If we look at the league this past year and see how it’s going, we’re never going to be embarrassed by our 11 losses,” said coach Jerry York of Boston College (27-11-4).

BC plays Maine in one semifinal Thursday; Michigan State (29-5-7) and New Hampshire (30-6-3) play in the second.
