Thanks to John Von Rhein for his tribute to violinist Yehudi Menuhin (March 13).

I fell in love with Menuhin in 1930, when we were both 14. He performed in Chicago at a series benefiting the Girl Scouts.

I remember the slender blond boy in short pants who came on stage, bowed, tucked his violin under his chin and promptly broke a string!

He lost no composure–and had me as a disciple for life.
