Wheaton Warrenville South boys volleyball team dodged a bullet Thursday.
The No. 9 Tigers (2-0) shook off a string of late errors to claim a 15-6, 10-15, 17-15 non-conference victory over St. Charles.
“We were inconsistent,” said Wheaton Warrenville South coach Bill Schreier, who saw a three-point lead slip away late in Game 3 because of a series of miscues. “They stepped up when they needed to. They’ve got character and that’s something that we need to rely on.”
St. Charles took advantage of South’s mistakes to erase a 13-10 deficit and move to the brink of victory with leads of 14-13 and 15-14.
But a Saints hitting error helped the Tigers tie the game 15-15 and South outside hitter Eric Willey followed with an ace for a 16-15 lead.
Evan Wing then put a tap over the net for the final point.
Willey and sophomore Sean Rooney each had 14 kills while setter Erik Aister had 33 assists.
St. Charles (2-3) dominated Game 2 and much of Game 3. The Saints had a game-high 19 kills from Brian Boudreaux and 10 more from Justin Erickson.
