You’ve probably seen on-line services brag about “real time” messages, video streams, etc. Sounds impressive, huh? Well, keep in mind chatting on the phone happens in real time too. In computer terms, real time means that the program reacts so quickly it feels instantaneous. The opposite of real time, in case you want to impress friends with techy mumbo-jumbo, is asynchronous. Newsgroups and e-mail, for example, are asynchronous because both sides don’t communicate at the same time.
