I feel there would be less distaste for the proposed increase in state license fees if, along with it, Gov. George Ryan would propose taking down the tollway gates in the state. These gates are contributing factors to rush-hour gridlock. Sometimes there are backups of a mile in order for people to throw 40 or 50 cents into a bucket. This treatment of the citizenry of Illinois shows contempt for the people. Anyone who would be responsible for getting rid of these gates would probably win the next election by a landslide. I don’t propose that people working at the gates lose their jobs. I’m sure they could be accommodated in other state positions through attrition, etc.
