A former Congress party politician who was thrown out of the party for challenging Sonia Gandhi’s right to run for prime minister said Friday that he would form a rival party to contest India’s upcoming elections.
Sharad Pawar, a party boss from the western state of Maharashtra, and two others were expelled after demanding a constitutional amendment to bar foreign-born citizens from becoming prime minister. The Italian-born Gandhi resigned as party president after the proposal was made, creating chaos in the Congress leadership.
Pawar said he would found a new party after a meeting Saturday with the other two expelled party members, Purno Sangma and Tariq Anwar.
