A man charged in the shooting death of a Crystal Lake shop owner will be examined to determine if he was legally insane at the time of the slaying, a judge ruled Friday.

McHenry County Judge Thomas Schermerhorn approved the motion for a psychiatric examination of Douglas Vitaioli, 49, of unincorporated Crystal Lake.

Vitaioli has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and committing a hate crime. He allegedly shot shop owner Naoki Kamijima because the victim was Japanese-American.

Vitaioli is being held in McHenry County Jail, Woodstock, on a $2.5 million bond.
