The final matches of the Women’s World Cup gave us a combined 210 minutes of scoreless soccer. This unsurprising result is an embarrassment. Inveterate soccer fans, like myself, and potential fans who occasionally tune into a game, agree this is a serious failure of the sport.
Soccer needs to enforce and fashion rules that allow more goals to be scored. Maybe most of us American soccer fans are Johnny-come-latelys who don’t appreciate crucial games decided by a keeper guessing the right way on a shootout. My opinion is that Americans are the most sophisticated sports fans in the world. The game of soccer can be made more fun to watch and more likely to result in the better team winning.
