Two children and a 54-year-old woman still were in critical condition Sunday with injuries suffered in a fire at their South Side home over the weekend.

Sister and brother Sheldonia and Mario Escort, age 14 and 3, were treated for burns and smoke inhalation in the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital.

The girl was in the burn unit, and the boy was in an intensive care pediatric unit, according to a hospital spokesman.

Stephanie Barat, whose relationship to the children was unknown, also was listed in critical condition at Cook County Hospital.

Firefighters battled the blaze at a 1 1/2-story home in the 100 block of West 111th Place at 4:45 a.m. Saturday. Dolores Escort, 70, the children’s grandmother, died in the fire.

The cause of the fire still was under investigation Sunday, but Fire Department officials said it appeared the blaze began in the kitchen and rear first-floor bedroom, then spread upstairs.
