A drug taken to prevent osteoporosis helps build hip and spine bone density in postmenopausal women who have the disorder, according to research reported in The Journal of the American Medical Association. The drug, Raloxifene, preserved bone mineral density and reduced bone fractures, says Dr. Bruce Ettinger, an endocrinologist at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif. He and his colleagues studied more than 7,700 women to determine the drug’s effectiveness. Study participants, aged 31 to 80 years, were postmenopausal and met the criteria for having osteoporosis. “Vertebral fractures decreased 35 to 50 percent among women treated with Raloxifene for 36 months,” Ettinger wrote in the Journal.
