Thousands of accomplished women made their marks over the last 100 years. We chose a few who inspired us (we invite your suggestions) and who inspired fashion designers for the fall season. Some women had a personal, idiosyncratic style; others, frozen in frame, evoke the time in which they lived; still others were consummate fashion divas.

Plucking ideas from different eras underscores what women want: freedom to create and choose their own looks. To bring that point home, the 13 women featured herewho cut across decades, yet are refreshingly current–are portrayed by only two models. By dressing the parts in today’s clothes, they become women of the century.
