We live in the digital age of cellular phones, voice mail and “menus.” The use of a menu when calling a bank or an airline can be anything from frustrating to downright exhausting.
Here is a real life example of what I have to go through just to get my bank balance:
1. Dial a 10-digit, toll-free number preceded with 1.
2. A pleasant recorded voice declares “to use our automated business bank by phone system please press 1.”
3. Next the same pleasant recorded voice commands: “Punch in your nine-digit tax number.”
4. Then “punch in your two-digit access code.”
5. Then “punch in your four-digit password.”
6. Then “welcome to. . .for account balance press 1.”
7. Then “enter your two-digit account code.”
That’s a grand total of 30 punches by the time I get the balance.
Is this system progress?
