Cook County residents traded more than 4,500 guns for cash or gift certificates during a monthlong weekend buyback program that wrapped up Saturday.
“We had a few antique weapons, an AK-47 assault rifle and even an Uzi brought in,” said Penny Mateck, a spokeswoman with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, which sponsored the program. People went to eight drop-off locations throughout the county to exchange weapons for $50 in cash or a $75 gift certificate.
