Columbus Day, Oct. 11, is a federal holiday. The following public services are affected:

– Schools: Public schools in Chicago and many suburbs will be closed.

– Government offices: All federal and state offices, and most Cook County and city offices, will be closed. There may be exceptions in some counties. Check with local officials.

– Postal service: No mail delivery.

– Courts: Federal, state and circuit courts will not conduct business.

– Banks, S&Ls: Most will close.

– Financial markets: The Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade will both be open for regular trading.

– Parking: Chicago meters must be fed.

– Transit: CTA, Metra and Pace will run on normal weekday schedules.
