For the second time in three months, administrators at the McHenry County-run Valley Hi Nursing Home outside Woodstock are working to get pay raises for certified nursing assistants.
The nursing home’s administrator, Jon Platakis, on Tuesday told the County Board’s Valley Hi Committee he would like to increase the starting pay rate for CNAs by 50 cents an hour, to $8.75. Last August, the board raised the starting rate for CNAs to $8.25 an hour from $7.85.
Even with their raise to $8.25 an hour, the nursing home’s CNAs remain at the bottom of the area’s pay scale in their job category, Platakis said. Valley Hi has 15 unfilled CNA positions.
He said a raise to $8.75 an hour could cost $63,000, but reduced overtime costs should more than offset that amount.
The committee took no action on the request.
