Norman Benjamin Friedman, 77, a former business professor at Richard J. Daley College and a longtime resident of Hyde Park, died Wednesdayat the University of Chicago Hospitals. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1922, Mr. Friedman received a degree in aeronautical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1944. For a short time, he worked at the agency that preceded NASA. Working as a mechanical engineer, Mr. Friedman played a part in designing the original Volkswagen Beetle. In 1967, he earned a master’s in business administration from the University of Chicago. He taught at Daley College for 25 years, retiring in 1992. An avid reader, he had a unique collection of secondhand books. For years, Mr. Friedman was an institution at O’Gara & Wilson bookstore in Hyde Park. Every Friday, a bookstore employee would pick him up at his home and bring him to the shop, so he could spend an afternoon there. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; a daughter, Adele; and a son, Victor. A memorial service is pending.
