Take a good look in your living room, kitchen or bedroom; see anything there you’d call art? No, not paintings or sculptures–what about your furniture, fixtures, even clothing? Perhaps their usefulness helps us take them for granted, but the design and fabrication of everyday items require their own kind of artistry. SOFA Chicago 1999 is an international expo that seeks to blur, if not obliterate, the distinction between fine and functional arts. Friday through Sunday at Navy Pier, the work of more than 1,000 artists will be displayed in mediums such as ceramics, fiber, jewelry, glass, wood and metal. Panel discussions and a lecture series are also featured. $10 for one day, $16 for a three-day pass. Call 800-563-SOFA or visit www.sofaexpo.com.
