DRY SKIN WORSE IN WINTER: The outermost layer of the skin contains flattened, dead skin cells that act to protect the inner layers of the skin from injury and to reduce evaporation of moisture from the skin. When this layer is disrupted, infection can occur and the skin can become dry.
WHAT CAN BE DONE: Although so-called moisturizers don’t actually add moisture to the skin, they can help with dry skin by forming a thin barrier of oil to keep the moisture in the skin from evaporating. Dry skin sufferers should avoid hot showers and baths and opt for cool, quick bathing, especially in the winter when extremely dry skin can itch and be damaged by scratching.
