Helen E. Mengler, 84, of Elgin, a retired bookkeeper, died Wednesday in Sherman West Court, a retirement home in Elgin. Mrs. Mengler was a resident of Elgin for more than 50 years. In the late 1950s, she worked more than 10 years as a bookkeeper at Paragon Plumbing and Supply in Elgin. She later worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Johnson Plastics in Elgin, before retiring in 1987. She enjoyed crafts and crocheted afghans and sweaters. “She was a very sweet lady,” said her niece Pat Mengler. She is also survived by a sister, Lenna Schmidt. A service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin.
