While millions of Americans ponder how to stop the ever-increasing problem of youth violence, Jesse Jackson leads a group to protest a Decatur school’s strong stand against such violence (Page 1, Nov. 8 and 9). In troubling times like these, we should support Eisenhower High School’s difficult administrative decision to expel the offenders and provide a safe environment in which other students are free to learn, grow and thrive. Mr. Jackson’s actions continue the cycle of excusing, thus encouraging, youth violence and endangering other students, teachers, administrators and the entire public education system.
Since Mr. Jackson has publicly stated that this idea of expelling youth, when they can be reclaimed and redeemed, must be challenged, why not take this challenge on personally? Why not establish special schools where expelled students will have the privilege of being reclaimed and redeemed by Mr. Jackson and like-minded leaders?
