Walgreens Drug Stores recently floated a revised plan for a store on 111th Street that apparently still does not meet Palos Hills parking requirements.
The drugstore giant originally proposed a 14,000-square-foot store at the northeast corner of 111th Street and Southwest Highway. Developers had sought a variance because the site did not have the number of parking spaces required by city codes. On Sept. 27, the Plan Commission unanimously recommended to the City Council that the variance be denied.
The plan was opposed by many residents, in particular the president of a small drugstore chain with a shop adjacent to the proposed Walgreens. Phillip Guastella and his wife, Diana, presented copies of a petition with 1,060 signatures to the City Council last week, charging the drugstore was too large for the site and that Walgreens engaged in “predatory competition” against smaller stores.
George Arnold, an attorney representing the development company, last week presented a revised plan to the City Council that calls for a 10,637-square-foot building that could accommodate the required 71 parking spaces.
