William Melby, 86, of Elgin died Saturday in Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Born in Chicago, Mr. Melby served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. He was stationed in North Africa and in Italy, where he worked on radio communications. He was a captain when he was discharged in 1945. A resident of Elgin since 1939, Mr. Melby was a radio supervisor for 38 years for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. in Elgin. He retired in 1974. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ruth; a daughter, Janice McDowell; a brother, Roy; and three granddaughters. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral Chapel, 51 Center St., Elgin, followed immediately by services in the funeral chapel.
