Rev. Vernon Kutscher, 88, who made a living in business but devoted much of his life to ministry, died Tuesdayat the Manor Care nursing home in South Holland. Raised in a devout Christian household in Harvey, Rev. Kutscher “just loved to do whatever’s necessary to help anybody get along in this world . . . and lead them to the Lord,” said his brother, Norman. Rev. Kutscher always kept a Bible with him and sought opportunities to share his faith, his brother said. He started his business career distributing newspapers in Harvey and later worked for a bakery, a factory and as a salesman for the Bliss & Laughlin Steel Co., his brother said. Rev. Kutscher studied at Chicago’s Moody Bible Institute and was ordained while in his 20s, his brother said. He worked with various churches, and in recent years, he counseled elderly congregants of Homewood Church, his brother said. Other survivors include a son, Charles; a daughter, Susan Durkin; another brother, Marvin; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in Tews Funeral Home, 18230 S. Dixie Highway, Homewood. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Homewood Church, 18301 Governors Highway, Homewood.
