The Blackhawks’ Jean-Pierre Dumont scored 12 seconds after Bryan McCabe’s goal to pace the Hawks to a 5-2 win over the Sharks in San Jose on Dec. 14. However, those two goals were not the fastest in club history. That distinction belongs to Victor Desjardins and Frank Ingram, who on New Year’s Day 1931 scored goals five seconds apart in a 10-3 rout of the Philadelphia Quakers at Chicago Stadium. Jim Pappin established the club record for the fastest two goals by one player when he notched a pair six seconds apart on Feb. 16, 1972, in a 3-3 tie with the Philadelphia Flyers, also at the Stadium.

STAND OUT

After 31 games, Andrew Brunette leads the expansion Atlanta Thrashers in scoring with 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points. His early-season heroics have put him on target for a projected 68-point season. Should Brunette maintain his current pace, he will become the seventh player in NHL history to lead an expansion team by scoring 60 or more points in his inaugural season. Brian Bradley, the leader in this category, broke in with Tampa Bay in 1992-93 and is the only player to average better than a point per game for an expansion team. Buffalo’s Gilbert Perreault is the only rookie in the this group above.

WON FOR THE AGES

Dallas head coach Ken Hitchcock, in his fourth full season behind the bench, registered career win No. 175 in a 3-2 victory over the Canadiens in Montreal Dec. 1. The win propelled Hitchcock past Glen Somnor (174 wins in six seasons) to become the all-time wins leader in franchise history. Only two other coaches, Bob Gainey (165) and Jack Gordon (116), have posted 100 career wins in club history.

ELEVENTH HEAVEN

The Penguins doubled the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2 in Pittsburgh Dec. 11 and set a team record for shots allowed in the process. By allowing just 11 shots on goal, the Pens shaved two shots off the old team mark of 13 set Oct. 22, 1969, in a 2-0 loss to Los Angeles and matched Dec. 12, 1997, in a 2-2 tie at Phoenix. %%
