My husband and I recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. We have lived all our married lives in Warrenville, where we raised our children. Living in such close proximity to Chicago has provided our family many memories.
Standouts are: Winning a set of Encyclopedia Britannica at the Railroad Fair in 1949; watching the Queen of England walk the red carpet that was laid from Lake Michigan’s edge to Buckingham Fountain; the kids sitting astride the Art Museum lions while watching the Shriners’ Parade; the wonder of viewing the city from the (then) tallest building (the Standard Oil Building); many spectacular July 3rd fireworks displays synchronized to the “1812 Overture” at Grant Park; viewing the State Street windows during the holidays; taking walking tours to view Calder’s “Flamingo” at the federal building, the Chagall wall at the First National Bank plaza and the Picasso at Daley Center Plaza; visits to the “new” Navy Pier with its ice rink, Children’s Museum and ferris wheel; the view of the lake shore from a friend’s 43rd-floor apartment; and the birthday “dinners of choice” at Berghoff’s.
