It appears that we did not learn anything from the energy crisis in the 1970s. At that time, the U.S. vowed never again to be so dependent on foreign oil. And for a while we did change our habits. We started making more energy-efficient homes, vehicles and appliances.

But with the booming economy of the 1990s, many people are now building huge trophy houses, living 50 miles from their workplace, refusing to use public transportation and driving gas-guzzling behemoth SUVs. As a result we have become even more dependent on foreign oil.

Maybe if these people did not lead such energy-wasteful lives, the current rise in gasoline prices would not have occurred in the first place or would not be having such an adverse impact.
