Part of a coal storage silo collapsed during demolition work Thursday afternoon at a closed mine, killing two workers, authorities said.
A large part of the silo wall collapsed at the Monterey Mine, trapping the workers beneath it, said Tom Heuer, assistant chief of the Clin-Clair Fire District in the southern Illinois town of Albers, between Centralia and Belleville.
“It was a failure, a structural failure,” Heuer said.
The Clinton County coroner’s office confirmed the workers’ deaths.
