Starting next summer, students at Harper Community College will see fee increases in a wide range of courses.

The Harper Community College board of trustees approved in a 6-1 vote Thursday night the increases to cover added costs for supplies and materials but decided to hold the line on tuition for at least a year.

The fee increases, ranging from $2.50 to $30 per course, will go into effect during summer semester.

Seven “NetPrep” courses, in which students learn to hook up computer hardware systems, will each see among the largest of the fee increases–$25–for a total of $50. “The Topics in Journalism” class will include a new $25 fee while “The Promotion of Fashion” course will have a new fee of $20.

Trustee Richard Gillette, who cast the dissenting vote, said the increases were unnecessary.

Citing favorable comparisons with tuition rates at neighboring community colleges, the board unanimously agreed to keep in-district tuition at $54 per semester hour from summer 2000 to spring 2001.
