Steve Chapman’s Feb. 27 column attacking John McCain for overplaying his war-hero status is off the mark. Surely Chapman realizes McCain is attempting to point out an ugly but true difference between himself and Bush.
In Hanoi, McCain was offered early release because of his name (admiral’s son). Even though he was near death, his honor and integrity prevailed over self-interest and he refused the offer. He remained a POW until the war ended.
Bush is on the opposite end of the self-interest scale. Here is a man who welcomes and embraces every opportunity his name brings and then uses them to further his self-interest.
